Made a couple of guides to help cut 6x6" notches in 14x18x36" hay bales for a house.
The first attempt consisted in a coffin long enough to fit a bale and place the notch where needed.
All the panels are made out of 3/4" plywood, and the framing is from 2x6" studs (ie 1.5x5.5" because... freedom units).
The green boards are used to bookend the bale. Once the lid is installed, cutting is supposed to be done vertically.
But it ended up being too unwieldy: too heavy, too cumbersome, awkward vertical cutting, etc.
So, on to Version 2 that simply consists in a saddle that just straddles the bale.
That did it, much more convenient and faster to use.
The 2x6" framing around the opening (purple in pic below) are sacrificial pieces that can easily be replaced once they get chewed up too much by the chainsaw.
The blue pegs actually are 3" screws that push the twine out away from the blade when the saddle gets pushed in place. One of the twines is always right there at the 6" mark, so cutting it would make the bale fall apart. Hence the pegs / screws:
