After trying to scan my foot and finding that keeping a still leg while taking pics all around is challenging, I designed this phone holder. Now I can simply sit and easily move the phone 360° around, at 3 different heights / angles, resulting in a clearer and more precise 3D model reconstruction.
Each extension arm screws into the extension below, so a user can just print as many exensions as needed, from one station location to 2, 3, 4...
The phone is held with a standard articulated phone adapter mount that has a camera cold shoe base. So it simply slides into the ring that comes with each extension, making it easy to move the phone from one height to another and change its angle.
Worked perfectly. Here is an early setup example and the 3D scan result (process will be covered in a coming post):
The Fusion360 CAD model (messy), STEP and 3MF files are on Github
Happy scans to all !
Settings
- PLA, 0.4mm nozzle, 0.24 layer height
- 2 walls, 3 top, 2 bottom
- 20% Support Cubic infill
- Extensions & rings: print as many as needed
Phone Adapter Mount
I used this one from Ulanzi
But any adapter will do as long as:
- it is articulated in Z axis (see pic above) so that the phone can be pointed down at a steeper and steeper angle the higher it is positioned
- it has a camera cold shoe base (screw hole not needed):
