[DIY] Wrench Organizers - 3D Print

Needed to organize a mess of wrenches, so I designed these metric and SAE wrench holders.

The most challenging aspect was to make the design compliant enough to work with both skinny and thick wrenches, as there can be quite a difference:

Thicker wrenches migtht not fit in, while very thin ones will slide around. The model being parametric though, one can always easily tweak it by changing a specific opening's width and / or the bump_thickness parameter:

And should the number of wrenches needed be different, the nb_wrenches parameter can be changed, though that requires modifying the sketch to add / remove wrench slots.

The Fusion360 CAD model, STEP and 3MF files are all on Github and MakerWorld

Feel free to copy, remix, whatever.

Happy printing to all !

3D Printing

Settings, Bambu ABS on H2S:

  • 0.4mm nozzle, 0.2mm layer height
  • 3 walls global, 4 walls modifier for rigidity for the first ~15mm of height
  • 4 top, 3 bottom
  • 1.0 flow (bumped up from 0.95)
  • 26% ironing on topmost surface, 30mm³/s
  • Seam set to Back (holders printed at ~30° ccw angle so all seams are aligned and land on top right corner of features)
  • 30% adaptive cubic infill, with combination
  • 5mm² minimum sparse infill threshold (fills in the bumps for wear resistance but not too much)
  • no support, no brim
  • Each print takes about 5 hours and 190 grams of filament.

The numbers are embossed only 2 layers deep and all at the same height, so only 2 filament color swaps are needed if printing with colors.

     Design

     The model is pretty straightforward:

As mentioned earlier, each opening can be tweaked for fatter / thinner wrenches.

Both the bump and spring dimensions scale up automatically, from the small wrench size to the largest. That results in an insertion / removal force and a retention pressure somewhat proportional to each wrench's weight and size.

Some sets can also have very long or short wrenches. This can be adjusted for via the top_width and bottom_width parameters. Note that the larger these dimensions the longer the spring tabs will be, so the less creep will become a problem overtime.

Once printed, a 20mm x 3mm (0.79x0.12") magnet can be superglued in to hold small wrenches or miscellaneous items like bolts, screws, etc.

No more looking for the 10mm wrench among a messy pile in a drawer, c'est top moumoute:

Now, onward to designing socket holders...
